There was" a very good muster present, though not so many as might have been expected from the enthusiasm with which the project was taken up. This, however, may be accounted for bytlie fact that the place of meeting had been twice changed^ Mr. Weight took the chair, and explained that his Excellency' the &ovefnor having, accepted the services of the Feilding Volunteers, the meeting had been called for the purpose of swearing m, eleoting officers and other business. Mr. Daw proposed the first resolution namely—*' That a company of volunteers be foimed m Feilding, to be called the Manchester Rifles." ;■ Mr. Toad had great pleasure m seconding the motion. The name had its advantages, and was a euphonious combination- and he hoped the company' would be quite wiling to accept it* " ' . '.
