The following remarks on the ques-. tion of taking on flesh, extracted from the Town and Country Journal—* paper largely devoted to the pastoral and farming interests of New South Wales —will, no doubt, be appreciated by many of our readers :-r" English papers have printed not a little interesting data respecting the papacity of different breeds of cattle, of various ages, for taking on flesh] and the figures seem to point to the following three propositions. 1. That, broadly speaking, the younger the ages at which can be shown fat,' the more satisfactory the results. y% That it is at ■uch ages, among the pure breeds, that the superiority of the short horn is most strikingly manifest. Later pn, at three and a-half years, the shorthorn is beaten by others. 3. That the "cross-breeds," which notoriously depend chiefly on short-horn bulls, conspicuouslysurpass] au]y??pur« breed; whatever; These* i< conclusions ; verify the popular views, and show that they have,' however acquired, had substantial facts to support them; These propositions, embodying as they do, the results of protracted investigation and practical experience must prove eminently satisfactory to . the stock-owners of New Zealand, showing as they? do that m improving their herds by crossing with short-horn sires, they are,at the same time securing the speediest return for the capital they t have invested. ___
