Highway's Boabd. — The usual monthly meeting of £he Manawatu Highway's Board, will be held to-morrow, at their office, m the Town Hall. Dbamatio Entertainment. — We understand that a capital programme is being prepared by the committee of the Workingmen's Dramatic Club, the particulars of which will appear m our next issue. The. Aems Act. — We understand a meeting, of . storekeepers and. settlers interested m the s le and purchase of powdey and ammunition, is to be held m the Town Hall to- morrpw eyeing, to ventilate the existing evils m connection with the working of the Arms Act. Peofessionai. — It will he seenhy a notice m anqlher column that Mr. Frederick Browne, architect, of Wanganui, has opened an agency m Palmerston. Arrangements hare been made with Mr. F. Venn, to act m the capacity of agent, Mr. Biwne intending to • pay monthly professional visits to Palnierston. * Attempted Suicide. — A man, named Henry Aslit, who was employed as a tutor, by Mr. Christopher Simpson, at Bainesse Farm, attempted, suicide on Saturday, by cutting his throat. Notwithstanding the throat had been almost sav^n through, the wounds will not prove dangerous. Doctor Eockstrow was quickly m attention and pressed the injuries inflicted, which were caused while suffering from a heavy fit of drinking, If he is sufficiently recovered to bo removed, he will be brought up at tho Police Court to-morrow. Palmebston_Eipxe3.— Members of this oompariy will observe m our advertising columns that the Government parade will take place next Monday niglit m the Town Hall at the usual hour. Major Noake has expressed his intention of being present on the occasion, and we trust that the corps will muster m full force, and acquit themselves m a manner so as to justify the high expectation formed of them by the Inspector General of Volunteers, when on his visit here a few months ago. An extra drill f or recuita will he given on Saturday next, at the usual hour and place of asienir blago. The Haemqnic Society. — A general meeting of the members of the Harmonic Society was held on Wednesday evening, the president m the chair. In consequence of tihe paucity of attendance during tho winter it was resolved to adjourn the weekly practices for two months, the hon. secretary m the mean tijne to make determined efforts to increase the list of member*, and get m the subscriptions due. After some little routine business, and votes of thanks to the ladies and the late acting conductor, the meeting terminated. Appeals Against the Land Tax. — We have, been courteously shown a telegram received by Mr. Ward from the Government with regard to the days for holding the Courts of Appeal against the Land Tax valuations. Although the dates are not definitely fixed, it has been suggested jtliat appeals should be heard at Palmerston oh iTriday and Saturday, the Isth and 16th, pf August, and afc Marton, on Monday and Tuesday, the 19th and 20th. Although we are not authorised m arnouncing that the above will be the ; dates, there is every probablity that such will be the case. Justices' CottbtS/ — From .the increase of businoss m the local Police Court, it it almost necessary to hold" daily sittings. As Mr; Snelson has very properly declined to preside until he is relieved ' by investigation oif the stain put upon him as a magistrate, the whole of the work falls upon Messrs.. NcNeil and Dalrympfe. We; certainly think ■the time has now arrived when the Eesident Magistrate, should hold a weekly Court at Palmerston, ., . Although,. of course, there js plenty of civil business upon his fortnightly visit, the criminal cases are "pretty wejl disposed of by the " Great Unpaid.'' On Monday Mr. McNeil had no less than three offenders before him— George Thompson, "remaride_d until Thursday, upon a charge of b,orse-stealing 5 David Giinn, fined five shillings for drunkenness; and ' William Carr, whose hail of £1 was estreated f^or the same offence. . ' ' '.. Stiljp AKothee Captuee. — Co.nsta.ble Gillespie is certainly, getting his name up for the number and cleverness of his captures. On M«nday morning Constable M'Nulty arrived m, Palmerston m search of a man who" was wanted for the" robbery 6$ a gold watch and chain from Foxtoq. Although the officer from Foxton searched all through the town, his endeavors were without success, and he then took horse and rode on the way to Napier. After his departure, Constable Gillespie,- acting upon •a 'suspicion that the robber had mads for Feilding, hired Gobdiss.bn f B, trap; and proceeded '>m ' company with? Constable M'lvor along- the>road to Awahiiri. However no. tidings of- the fugitive could be obtained jintil Feilding had been almost reached, when the pursuers come up with their man, and having secured him,' took him on tP Feilding,' and back by the a£tert_ noon train. When locked up he gave the name of John "Dei^itt, and. alleged : he. was the jockey /who rode Fishhook at; Oamaru, when that horse was^disqualified; He was brought before the Eesident Magistrate yesterday, 'and remanded until ,to-mor-
