NEWS AND NOTES

San Fbancisco Mai'iT,— We have heon asked to notify that, the outgoing English mail will close at the Palmerstpn office tomorrow evening; at ' a quartet 1 to eight o'clock. ■ .:',„ The Salb To-day.— lt is needless to do more than remind our readers that fcbe 1 sale of property at Halcombo takes place to-day. As the lots to be submitted have been so arranged as to suit the means of small as well a9 large capitalists, we expect to see a largo muster of buyers, and a keen competition. The Babbit NtrisAircE. — We are pleased to see tbat the attention of the public has been aroused to the seriousuess of the rabbit question, and that a public meeting is to be held with regard to the matter on next Saturday. As it is a subject which deeply concerns the country settlers, the hour of meeting has been fixed for the afternoon, \n order to give them, as well as the town ifolk, an opportunity of taking part m the proceedings. A Veet Peobee Resolve.-tWo learn from Mr. Snelson that he has determ'nsd not to take his seit on the Bench, until he has been relieved by investigation or otherwise of the charge of misconduct as a pre- j siding Justice brought against him by the Marton paper. Every person must commend such a resolve, for- certainly- has M>. Snelson been guilty of what he had been accused he would not be worthy of occupying the seat of Justice. The Palmbbbton Cbickbt Club.— A meeting of the committee of the above <?lub has been. convened for to-morrow evening, for the purpose of making ay. an gements for the corning season. In connection with the mutter wp may state that we have heard with pleasure that an offer has most generously been made of a piece of ground by a gentleman recently located m Palmeraton. We have not heard any of the details, but we believe one of the objects of the coming meeting is to accept the gift, and suitably thank the generous donor. Valedictory. — A number of the friends of Mr. Contain, Station-master at Palmer•ton, assembled at the Royal Hotel, on Sa-> turday evening, m order to wish him goodbye upon his leaving to take possession of his new charge at Kai I wi. About twenty gentlemen were present, and the evening was spent m a very pleasant manner, Ihe songs and speeches being enlivened with "the glorious vintage of champagne." Mr. Cottam i3 an old piiblie servant m this town, and beur3 with hi-n to his new sphere the heartiest good-wishes for his success and happiness. . . The Asms Aot.— We understand a memorial is being numerously signed by settlers m the district, asking the Colonial Secrefca-y to relax the extreme stringent measures now m force with regard to the sale of blasting powder. We should suggest that a second memorial be prepared asking the Government to establish a school of instruction m which, officials and . dealers would alike be grounded m the mysteries of the Arms Act. We have it from one dealer that he wrote to the Customs in' Wellington asking whether it was necessary to pay a certain fee or not. - The reply was " We cannot exactly say whether it is or not ; however, you better pay the amount and be on the sure »icle." Convenient as that course might bo for the Department, it is one that most paople would object to on the snore of economy. The Geqrgias. —Those popular favorites succeeded m drawing a capital house on Monday evening, the, audience being not only larsje, but demonstratively appreciative. The eccentricities of Billy Wilson were provocative of the most boisterous 'merriment, nnd euulnient to draw a smile from an anchorite. Qharley Crusoe's ",Few Remarks," though reeinin.g with puns and witticisimsl werp delivered with a serious ! gravity which constituted ita greatest merit; while Hosen, Easton's " Ole Varginny " was'received with raptures of applause. We must riot forget to mention the ballad singing of Mr. Thompson, who was m splendid voice, and sang " Minnie Lee" and other favorite ballad* m capital style. Taken altogether the entertainment was agr-eatsu'oceis; alike satisfactory to performers and audience, Mr. Hosea Easton on bahalf of the Troupe returning thanks for the liberal patronago accordeJ. . c< The Qfekn's Highway," — Is is one of Ihe unwritten laws freely acknowledged by Britons that ''an^Englishman's house is h,is enstle.V Indisputable as custom has made this insertion, it, "scarcely goes to the length of allowing the privileged race to "■ dump ,"the\r mansions down " proniiakus like " to the impeding of the Queen's highway. Such an occurrence, however, took place on Saturday evening, whon the portion of the Royal Hotel lately purchased by Mr. JToskinga, stopped short m the centra of the. Rungitjkei road, while being conveyed to:its ultimate destination. The building had been fixed upon wheels, but when at the' spot indicated, one of the axles snapped in -two, further locomotioo became impossible, and there it. remained during all Sunday. Ou Monday, however, fcha breakage was repaired, and with no little trouble the work of progression was resume!, and a thoroughfare quickly established • Rbsi&hation o.p ths Cohokeb. — We have it upon excellent authority that Dr. Rjookstrow. has. forwarded to the .Government his resignation of the office as the Coroner. We understand that the step would have been taken some time ngo were it not fc'int Dr. Rocksttow was awaiting the arrival of a second medical man m Foxfcon ; as that, however, has not so far eventuated, he determined to delay no longer, and now his resignation is on its way to the Department. Now that the ofn-e is vacan! no time should be lost m making application to hare the appointment, conferred upon Dr. Marriner, for two reasons — that it \i far more preferable to have the offio vested m a medical man ; and secondly, hay ing thatmejtycttl man resident iv Palmer

ston. The town is located m the very centre of the county, and we learn from statistics that while Dr. Rockstrow has had to attend as many a3 three inquests m the Upper District m one week, during the whole of his tenure, the number of inquests at the southern end would not exceed half a dozen.

The Nkw Zealand Ma&azin*. — We have received fronr Mr. George West, of Dunedin; No. I of "The New Zealand Magazine," being a musical publication, containing popular and standard songs, &c The work is of the same nature -as the " Colonial Musical Cabinet," published m Melbourne, by Glen, and contains twelve of the most popular comic and sentimental songs of the day. Mr. West has hitherto been known as one of the fiwt musical dealers m the South Island, and we are pleased to see that ho has had the enterprise to go into competition with hi 3 Australian rival m producing reprints of the latest standards woi'ks. It i 3 intended to issue a serie9 of numbers, nnd we have been forwarded a list of some two hundred pieces which have been specially selected by Mr. Towsey for Mr. West. " Th * New Zealand. Magazine" has been lithographed by Mr Thomas George, a name which stands at the top of the profession m Dunedin, and both the appearance and contents of the nnmber do infinite credit to the firm, while to add to all its other excellencies its salliqg price 3is the low sum of ono shilling.
