A COUNTY WORTH FIGHTING FOR.
A few years ago and Manawatu was a perfect terra incognita, persons who had chanced to hear its sweet-sounding appellation having just as remote a conception of its .locality as they had of Minnesota or Timbuctoo. N3W it has the grim Satisfaction of having three representative journals fighting for tbe pvoud privilege of being considered its especial champion ; while a fou-th is anxious to act the renegade to its own, m order to partake of the prosperity of the thriving county. Well, no ono can deny that a healthy, independent, well-con-ducted Pvess is a boon to any community, or that tlie p-esent flourishing condition of Manawatu is m no small degree owing to its ropretentat ive o-gan ; and consequently now that it has fellow-laborers m the field, we may look for increased prosperity and progress. Let us, howeve", have legitimate organs — jou'rals which are of the county and /m the county ; whose utterances aw prompted from a sincere desiro to benefit the districts they represent, not outsiders which are written to ordc\ and tr>m their sails to catch the popular breeze, nnd land the dollars and dimes. Truly, it is a county worth fighting for, but its interests are sufficiently guarded by /its trio of watchdogs that it can well dispense witli the hireling outsider, whose support is merely bestowed m consideration of favors as the reward of its sycophancy.
