CARNARVON ELECTION.

The election for a member to representNo. 2 Ward of the Manawatu Highways District, took place on Friday, the 9th inst., at the" school-honse. There was a very small attendance, and as; a consequence very little speech-making. Jt was proposed by •Mr, John Masters, and seconded by Mr. .Thomas Eowe, that Mr. Herman Rockel was a fit and proper person to represent the .district as Warden. There, being no other candidate for tbe honor, that gentleman was declared duly.elected. Mr. R. M'Kenzie made a few remarks, and stated that he had been asked to oome forward as a candidate, and fully intended doing so, until he heard that Mr. Jlookel was' offering his services, when he decided not to stand. He felt sure that -the ratepayers were making a good selection m Mr. Rockel. He had been looking at the matter of representation of late, and thought that, considering the amount of rateable value of No. 2 Ward, it was justly entitled to send two members to the Board m place of one, and he hoped that if an opportunity presented itself for such readjustment, Mr, Eockel would take every .advantage . qf . it. He was opposed to anything like separation from the old district, if it could be avoided. Mr. Rockel, m reply, [•aid that he, likewise, had been giving the same matter his consideration, and would do all m, his power to bring the change about, as he considered the Ward far too large for Qn,e^arden to attend to properly. He would dp. justice to the whole of the district while be b,ad the honor to represent it. He likewise, stated that m the past No. 2 Ward had ha<j every justice from the Board as far as a fair share of revenue was concerned, and he had no doubt but he should get every consideration from the same body for the future. He was not m favor of separation, but thought that matters would go along much better by don timung the connection with the Manawatu Road Board." .
