The English mail, via San Franoisoo. will close at P&lmewton to-morrow evening at 145. : A meeting was hje!3 last night, at which • the Mayor presided, to take steps to form a Jockey Club, and also to elect a Sports. Committee for Boxing Day. Committees for both objects wer© appointed, and it was resolved to hold the Annual Sport* ou the | Racecourse Reserve on Boxing Day. Contrary to all expectation, the two no Levi Buok and .Frita von Sohluter were found convicted of a breach of the Distillation Aot, and fined £100 eaoh ; m default, twelve months' imprisonment. At we intend to refer at some length to the case m our next issue' we refrain from further remark at present. We onderstad that m consequence of Morday having been gazetted a holiday, instead of Saturday/ the cricket match between the Palmerstoa and Marlon teams 'will be played on the former day. Not* withstanding the youth ef the Manawatu 'club, a very strong team will be brought to* -gether, and- they are very sanguine of being able toehold their own, even against such Dons as the Martonians are said t6 Ke. We are to have another rioh treat on Friday night, yrhem th© Oheever Minstrels take possession of the Foresters* Hall. -We make it a point never to speak m terms of commendation of any company with ■whose merit* w» are not acquainted, hut our mind is i freely at ease m advising all those who wish to enjoy a thorough treat to patronise the Minstrels. We speak of our own knowledge, and our opinion is endorsed by the Press m all parts of the .colony. . * One of the most amusing " sells " ever witnessed ocourred at the meeting at Foxton on Friday night. Just when the noise 'and confusion was at its height, one of the electors, .a Mr Collins, stood up, apparently with the intention of asking a question.. Above the clamor and dm the only words audible were "Did Mr London." The chairman invited the speaker to draw, •nearer, whioh h« did, and after another attempt, got as fai as " Did Mr Loudon use a screw-driver," when his voice was again drowned m the Babel of oonfusioth By this time the ohairman and candidates were on the tiptoe of ouriosity and exoitement, and the gentlemen oh the platform, naturally concluding from the comtaenoetnent of the question that it was another impeachment, made strenuous effort? to give tho interrogator a hearing. Mr Gray craned his jneok forward; Messrs Thynne and Dawson made a sounding-board of their hjinds, the better to .transmit the query, while the reporter Of the Herald' seized his torofessi6n«t;^©apon, and with eyes fixed on Mr Collins, aWaited his ulteranoe. When, horror of -horirors ! amidst breathless silence, followed -by roars of derisive, langhter, there ! earn* forth, '^Did" Mr Loudon use a screwdriver when he screwid off thr tail- of ilia, clique?" The pencil did. iff work, and the chairman did not wjl iix Loudoa to return aa answer. -~ '
On Saturday evening* a hone. belonging, to Mr George Richardson took if into hU bead to hare » gallop on hit own account, and unmindful that it was harnessed to a spring- ran, scampered across the Square, taking the ditchet m moat approved sleepier chase style. Wonderful* to say, it continued ita mad career unchecked and undamaged for a considerable tinje, but turning down the Foxton road, it collided -with anothor Tebiole m front of the wheelwright's shop, and both traps oame to grief. That with the runaway was knocked completely into smash, while the eeoond one had the shaft broken and .the axle bont. Singular to relate the latter was the identioal conreyance whose mishaps we Jhave been periodically . chronicling daring the past month. By a former accident the shaft was broken, and its owner, Mr Piers Warburton, had only left it a few hours before to hare it painted when the self-same shaft got again shattered. We have to congratulate the people of ! Palmerston upon the success of their efforts with regard to a resident clerk of the court. We know that cold water has been thrown upon the matter from certain quarters, but the following letter from Mr. Johnston happily show's that such mean attempts haTe proved futile. " The reply is m answer .to a"ec®iiinunioation from the Town Clerk on the subject, and reads thus : " The reply of Mr Sheahan to my question respecting the location at Palmerston of a resident clerk of the court must hare been inadequately reported. After stating what , the existing practice is, he went on to say j that the Government wore giving the matter their attention, m order to see how they . dould mcct t the iNjquirements of the town. I have Binoe hid "a conversation with Mr SheeKan on • tbe subject, and he authorised me to say that a olerk of the oourt will be located m Foxton." The Great international Cisous paid Palmerston a visit, and exhibited on Monday evening m a paddock close to the Princess Hotel. Although the evening was threatening, contrary .to expectation there was a capital house, the reserved seats being fairly filled, while sitting accommodation could not be obtained m the second seats. The oircua proper was not. .up to the usual standard, but this might be accounted for by the fact that men and. hoi'ees were com* pletely worn out, having. travelled during the day beween thirty and forty milea. In" the other portions- of the exhibition, however, there was nothing to complain of, and while the quartette of clowns kept the audience m thorough good humor by their antics, the feats of juggling, tumbling, and evolutions on the trapeze were vociferously applauded. Last, but not least, there was the Lady with the Iron Jaw, who, seising an ordinary wooden chair m her teeth, whirled it round and round her head with a velocity which some would find it difficult to imitate with .their arms. Dnring the evening Mr Hayes announced that the Troupe would pay the town another visit m about^three weeks, when he hoped the would be m more fitting condition.
