The Manawatu Times. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1878.

In our last issue two promised to refer to Mr Thynne's manifesto m reply to our leading article, and our l-ea'son for so doing was our flat denial of the accuracy o£ the following statement made by Mr Thynnb;— " However, the Councillors decided that the letter, as a public document, was to be read, or if not a public document, to be returned. In justice to the Clerk of the Council and myself, I absolutely refused to return it, and therefore read it, but not till I had earnestly urged Mr London's wishes." The italios are Mr Thyme's. Since our last publication, however, we have seen Mr Thynne, and with him agreed to let its truth be tested at the sitting of tho Council, and by the. Councillors, to-day. We do so, however, only upon one condition, and that is, that Mr Thynnb will not attempt to speak upon the matter until judgment has been Igiven. The justice of this course must be acknowledged; as it would be manifestly unfair that he at tho meeting should be allowed to poinc out to Councillor* what would be favorable to bis version, while the editor of t}na. paper would be powerless to recall facts which would completely turn the scale. On our part we are most positive that, with the exception of Or. IfcooraTßOW, no one wished the document read, or at least said so. Mr Thynnk says that he did not read it until he had earnestly urged Mr London's wishes. .Let Councillors give free utterance as to what their recolleotionH are, without being tutored or led up to the point, and we wiltbe satisfied.
