The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 1878.
A MEETrera is to be holden at Feilding on Monday, having for its object a movement whioh, if effectually carried out, will prove of material benefit to the County of Manawatu, and be one of the greatest aids m developing its resources. As is well known, a considerable portion of the distriot contains a class of timber, which, although not realising a high figure m. the market, is put exactly upon the same footing, m the matter of carriage, as totara, Matai, and other similar wood. The high tariff for the transit of white pine has hitherto totally debarred either the owners of mills or property m utilising to any great extent the vast supply available, and the object of the meeting is to bring such pressure to bear upon the Government as will oanse a considerable reduction upon the rate hitherto charged for transit on that timber. Were that accomplished, and a differential or kind of ad valorem tariff placed upon the commodity, a new trade would be opened up, the traffic of' the line would be increased fully four fold, and the exports at. the port of Foxton be materially increased. We are given to understand that Mr Halbombe while lately m Wellington, brought the matter under the notice of the Hon. Minister for Public Works, from whom he received a promise of favorable consideration. Before^ however, committing himself to the scheme, Mr; Macandrew was desirous of receiving a definite expression of opinion from those who will be affected by the proposed alteration m the tariff, and also some statistics as to what reduction is necessary, and what inbrease of tariff is likely to follow suoh reduotibn. For the purpose of properly disoussmg the question, and supplying the required data, a meeting of . the sawmill owners m the Manawatu has been called-f or Monday, at eleven o'clock. We believe circulars have been forwarded to those especially interested, but as it is a matter which will materially benefit the community at large, and add tothe progress and. developement of the resources of the distriot, we trust each one will give the movement their heartiest sym. pathy iand support.
