CORESPONDENCE.

[Our correspondence column being open, no responsibuHy c^n be accapfced in respect to opinions expressed by correspondents.] TO THE EDITOE. Sib, — Will you allow me space in your valuable paper to mate a few remarks, which I hope will not., -be ""'out of place, knowing from a casual glathije at the "Manaw'atu Times" that you are ,a strong, advocate for that which you believe to be right and just, arid dare to give honor where honor is duej and -censure Mt&re censure is due. .-■ M : ' : s' v ':. -^ o '\j^ -'■■■ .■•■■'■' ' Well, Sir, I wilibegin by -saying I became acquainted with Foxton some years ago, and considered myself one of its inhabitants, and therefore took an interest in its progress. 1 watohed with' interest the makin" of roads in different directions leading to Sandofl, Palmeraton, and Motoa, ! evidently showing, signs oE taking a step a-head. The latter place really stood in need of something being done to the roads, for the few settlers located there were almost completely shut in during the winter season. But the timely. aid oE the Highways Board, in the shape of its inspector -visiting : the district (he being a.~inan of sound judgment) struck at the root of the matter, and soon a substantial good vras effected. I do not include that beautiful bit : of Berpen-

tine road between Wood's Farm and Fofc^on, lately constructed, and opposite the Tark^orfcby Estate, which will be a benefit to the district . for many years to coma. But when folks get out of difficulty they forgefcf all about it. So it proved itself v the other jilav, some three or four of the settlers being 'brought before the Resident Magistrate for breach of the Highways Act, in allowing their cattle, horses and sheep to- > wander at large destroying ditches, <fec. It is really time it was energetically attended to. In riding from Foxton to Motoa I bave .frequently started a flock of sheep, which would go some distance in front of me, then turning off to the right or left leave the road clear for a short distance; then a. pig would bolt out of the "toitoi" or fern, causing my horse to shy, he being addicted to that weakness, and I, being a bad rider, stood in great danger of meeting terra firma rather abruptly.. By the time thecolour returned to my. cheeks, and my hair got properly into its place, I woulditart off at an easy canter, when shortly after wardsI would run into a mob of cattle, camped oq the road. .They being quiet, would only move when; l got abreast, of them ; they would invariably get up at the risk of a collision, and so on, throughout the entire length of the formed road. I have some times been glad to get to Foxton by taking the' down, river track. All credit is due to- the energetic official who brought th& offenders to justice.. I have heard of daring exploits by great men, and clever deviceii to attain, ends. ■■"'■.' I have heard of good navigators who could- find any port, and steer through difficult places. How a person could ride from Foxton to Motoa, and there drop oiv j two or three unfortunate ones, to the of blusion to others along the same road, is a problem which I am unable to solv^-^-I ana^ &c-, ■ ■'; ; '' : '-\y;.--" / ■•.'.-'. .■:.; N'^ettieb. ■■ .
