A meeting of the County t Council was held at the County : ChambersjvFbxton, on Monday, the 25th March 1878. PRESENT. Crs. Gower, Snelson, Haicombo;-Mac-arthur, McNeil, McDonald, Sanson, Loudon, and Thynne (Chairman). PBECIS OF LETTEBS. ■ From Rangitikei County Council, asking to bring the joint management of the Rangitikei Ifospital under the two Counties. / From the Treasury, informing the Council that £5 had been paid to the County in error, re Waikanae hotel, and asking for it to be refunded to the Hutt County Council. From the Engineer; informing the Chairman that work at Awahuri had been stopped by the Maories. From Hutt County Council,; asking' Council to assist in maintaining the • Waikanae Ferry. From Hoaui Taepua, stating two years' rent was due for Manawatu Ferry . From Ihakara Tukurriaru, asking for compensation for erection of pole on his ground, south bank of Mana- ► Watu River. : From Or, ..Snelson, asking the meeting as a faVor, first to consider the subject of appointing a clerk -"-to the County Council, as he Arished to leave by^he half past one train. strongly urged by some oE the Councillors, tliat the clerk should devote the whole of his time, while others did not consider it was necessary, as long as the clerk performed his duty to the satisfaction of the Councillors. Eventually a Councillor proposed that a discussion should be entered into with reference to the appointment of clerk, which was agreed to. / .;'' . The sixteen applicants were then balloted for, and as a final result, Mr McCulloch was the successful candidate. : * ' f Proposed by Cr. McNeil, ana. unanimously carried, "That in, the opinion of. the Council the Tainni-Kareae vblock of land just surveyed is -unfit ..for a special settlement, on account of its swampy nature, and that- this Council would recommend that sectional roads be made upon the block in order to drain it before' the land is placed in the market for selection, and that this Council ■Would. sunder take the work for the Government, if a sum of money sufficient to :*ao the work, is placed to their credit." ■ Propo3ed by McNeil, and seconded by Cr. London, "That if no satisfactory reply has been received from the railway authorities, for the conveyance of metal for the Elerere Road, that tenders, be jcalled for the same ,to be done by drays." Carried. Proposed by Cr. McAbthitb, and seconded by Cr; Halcombe, •" That the next meeting of the Counc^L be h.eld : on Thursday; April 4th 1878, . at 2 o'elock p.m. , fp^.the purpose of obtaining an adjustmeiit of accounts ibetween the various Riding?, of the Manawatu County." Sanson, " That ten shillings be paid to each member not residing in Foxton, for. each' and every meeting that they have attended during present financial year." Camed.
