January 24. The Auckland Timber Company's premises had a narrow escape from fire to-day. It originated at the boiler house, but was p omptly extinguished by the employers. Private intelligence says that Sir, Julius Yogel has retired from the directory of the New Zealand Loan and Agency Company. He promised to serve again if he resigned the Agent;- , : Generalship. Tuesday. / , The Regatta to-day was a failure owing to the drenching rain andjthere being no wind. A deputation from the Thani^s /waited on the Premier and urged the importance of the Thames Valley Railway. Grey replied that the acquisition of land was being rapidly pushed on and all; obstacles to the line would soon be removed. Apollo arrived from London with 250 ; immigrants all well. . . Grey goes to Wai katq early on Wedr nesday. The Bay Coal Co. declared a dividend of 10 per cent. Their success is mainly owing to the Union Co's boats using that coal. ,
