January 24. An extensive survey of Government purchased land has just been begun here m the Upper Mohaka country. The Opepe surveys, suspended, m., November last through native troubles? were completed yesterday under Major Turner. • The Tongariro Mountain, after an interval of eight years, is giving signs of activity. Loud rumblings were, heard there from the directions of the volcano last night, continuing at intervals to-day. The crater and cone are covered with clouds, so that the fires, if any, are not visible.
