Walking along the Strand the other day, an officer saw a man approaching m tatters, , currying a tray, oh. which were some small pies, marked, Id eaoh. As he got near him he Teeognised a brother officer, who had served m the same regiment some years previously. . He accosted the poor feUaw, and was sympathizing with him on his sad plight, and altered circumstances, when the other exclaimed, "Hang your pity L Buy a pie" A curious base of Christian conduct on the part of a dog recently occured'in Germany. The animal's owner, m order to get rid of him, rowed but into the river and threw him. m with a stone tied to bis neck. But the rope slipped off, and. the master, m. try-, ing to prevent fhe. dog from getting/back: into the boat, lost his footing, aiid fell? into ; the water himself . As he couldn't sw,hn. bY would hare drowned, if the magnanimous dog hadn't seized him by the coitt and lowed him ashore. The dog's life was spaced.
