PALMERSTON NORTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above was held on Monday the 7th inst. at 2, p.m. Members present : His Worship^ the Mayor, Crs. Jensen, Walton, Marsh, Gilbert, and Linton. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter From the Secretary of General Post Office, Wellington, intimating that an Officer from that department would visit Palmerston shortly to obtain particulars m connection with the proposed Office at Terrace End; Letter From Walter Johnston Esq., M.H.R., re proclamation of Endowment for the Borough. The Inspector of Works' monthly report was read and received. It shewed that nearly all the contracts let some time ago are nearly completed. Nuisance report shewed steady improvement, and drew attention to the fact that Maekies' butchery is r still as great a nuisance as it has been for a considerable time. The Town Clerk presented a balance sheet of Borough accounts to Sept. 30th 1878, shewing the Bank overdraft to be at that date £357 17s 6d. The overdraft at present is £471. Application from Richter & Co. for permission to lay a line of iron rails from the railway to their saw and flour mills, likewise requesting that a low place on the footpath adjoining the flour- mill be filled up, so. as to prevent the water from the road drains from flowing upon the mill site. Resolved that the application be handed over to the Public Works Committee. Application from C. Waldegrave for permission to erect a verandah over the footpath opposite his butcher's shop m the Square ; granted. ACCOUNTS PASSED FOE PAYMENT. Wages, £25 6d ; Clerk's salary, £18 15s ; Rent of Office, £5; Printing (Manawatu Times), £3 ss ; Burrett, Wellington, £2 10s 6d ; Walton & King, 6s 8d ; Blacksmith (tools), ~£3 13s. Resolved that a notice be inserted m the newspaper, calling upon ratepayers . to pay all arrears due, failing which, the collector was instructed to take legal proceedings for the recovery of the same. Resolved that the Reserves Committee with Mr Barton, CE.., visit the Reserve adjoining the River for the purpose of ascertaining the best method of cutting up the land with a view to leasing m sections, and reserving the most suitable part of it for a Race Course. ' The Counci] resolved to hold its meetings at 7 p.m instead of 2 p.m as at present. Notice of motion was tabled bjp Councillor Linton that this Council, m future, meet on the first Friday m each month instead of once a fortnight. The Council adjourned until Friday the 18th inst. at 7 p.m.
