' The following telegram has been received per Press Agency from Punedin:— - :■ ■'■'.-'' V' : - •.•'.■'■'■■"• ■'.'■ The barque Pallas, from Boston, via Adelaide, Captain Balletew, reports having met a terrific gale from W.8.W., m latitude 45 Si, longitude 128 E., with ■terrific sea. The captain set. the vessel under storm canvas, and the wind veered round , to the westward. The vessel was kept before the gale as long as possible, the sea keeping up m . furious mountains, at length breaking on board with a force almost incredible. From the break of the poop to the topgallant forecastle the whole of the bulwarks were ; swept away m one smash, and eighteen staunchions broken. off. Several others started m such a way that the water found access below m torrents. The debris of the bulwarks, __ planking, and main rail were washed ' about the decks,, starting watercasks, and doing other damage ; spars were also breaking adrift. Some of this happened at 6 o'clock, and gave the seaman a heavy night's work. The pumps, on being sounded, showed three leet of water m the hold m a quarter of an hour. All hands turned to with a will, some working the pumps, others patching the decks. Great anxiety was felt till it was found that thewater was got Tinder. When the full amount of damage was ascertained it was deemed advisable to bear up for Adelaide,, where she arrived on November 9. After repairs had been effected she left on November 17. % -
