RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
' FOXTON. (Before B. Ward'Eßq... E.M.,) The first Bitting m the Court House since its alteration was held on Wednesday. last. > > [His TSforship ;in taking Hs seat said> before the business of the Court is: prb-JMedfid-with^Lwißhtasay a fewwords. I must cppgratulatethe inhabitante of
Foxton npt only on the enlargement of their Court House, but as regards the conveniences of the Court" and its offices ; and what speaks still better for Fpxtdn is 'Ijnat there is less litigation and fewer crimes than m any Court I have to sit at. I can.'. also go, further and say that there are fewer hotels than m any. other place of its size . I know of iin the Colony. I do : riot know whether thisl helps to lessen crime, but I do know that the .difference between the litigation m tins Court and others I have to attend, is. great. There were . two criminal Cases before the Bench, one of assault and the other of furious riding. There were -:alsp five- civil cases but with the exceptipn of that of W. J. & F. London v ;•!. A . Moihet manager of the Railway for £3 3s for short delivery of a sack of &Qut- and camp oven broken and half the cost of camp oven cracked, they were: unimportant. After Mr Loudpn had made an explanation t» his saying the flour was short delivered to him and that the other things had gone, up the line and had been damaged, Ms Worship said that he considered that" the proceedings were informal Mr Loudon ought not ,to.have issued the summons against Mr Moinetj but against the Hon., the Minister for Public Works. The Eailv?ay were only ;a carrying company who agreed .to carry . the same goods from place to place' as other! such .companies and were responsible for .the actions of their servants, >and of the Hailway. The Minister for Public -Works was; the head and therefore to i him. the summons ought to have been, directed, though it 'iniglithave been served . on Mr Moinet. But he was very glad that the case had been brpnght forward;.. as it. -was the "first oi£ the ' sort that . had' come before him. -.'.'■'■ ■" ■ - -"_'-' ■■■'■'';■ -■:■ •'■ ■■ ■•- ■■'■■ . ; On an" application from Mr London j ■a'^non-suit was.- granted:'-. •:'■:'■■
