The following petition was read at the Chamber of Commerce, Wellington, on Wednesday last* — " Borough s Chambers, Palmerston N.ofth, August 13, 1877. — G-entlemen^ — In accordance with resolution passed, this day at the firstmeetiiig of the Palmerston North Borough Council,- we' were appointed a" committee to ask the co-operation and spmpathy of your Chamber m urging upon the^ Government the expedieriey of authorising the necessary stqps- for the construction of- the West Coast line" of railway to connect Wellington with the Pa'tea-Ma'nawatu railway, via Palmerston North. The proposed route re'conimetfds" itself to every traveller on this coast, and we believe must force itself upon your -^Chamber's deliberations; and we have every reason to hope the project will be favourablyentertained by you, and that prompt ac-tion-^such as : may seem to, you bestwill be taken m advising the Government to provide for the cost of the pfb--posed railway during this session of Parliament.— The Chairman and Men-tf bers of the Wellington Chamber ' : df ; Commerce."
