TO THB BDITOE. . . - Sib,— l beg to propose that the railway officials be authorised "to carry a rifle on each train for the .purpose o£ shooting 'any poor unfortunate animal they may happen to run down. It is reported that during the trip yesterday evening- -from Feilding to Foxton, po fewer than -five animals were either killed or maimed. The writer of. this saw one spoor bullock about a mile above Palmerston standing on the line with one of his hind legs cut off. - ' The animal was quite mad and charged anyone attempting to pass. I believe a little further along there was another aniiftil lying with two legs amputated, ang. still a little further another badly squeezed. Surely it is high, time the authorities made a- beginning to put . an end to "such barbarous doings which .could easily be prevented by simply fencing the railway line off >as is done m all civilised communities. — I am, " &c, ' : Humanity. ~ July 24th, 1877.
