TO THE EDJETOB. j Sib,— Without actually closing your columns against the matter of "Sim--. I plex's" charges re Otaki, Licensing Court, you 'have. intimated that further discussion on the subject can be of no public benefit. ' I agree with you, and beyond touching on it to show how unfairly " Simplex" has dealt m the controversy, the case here ends as far as I am concerned. More than once have I cleared • the) webs that he has with greater ingenuity than honesty woven around the real points at issue, and m my last letter I dispelled all extraneous matters, and there remained certain definite charges which I pointed out should be substantiated or retracted. Instead of the one or the other', comes a flood of words — the offspring of unwarrantable deductions from my letters — a very masterpiece of confusion, .interspersed with special pleading and prevarications, and bristling with the words — "justice," "temperance," and "truth ; " ' altogether a ponderous mass of mac-, curacies, that no newspaper could give - space to expose.' The press is taking the place of the - pulpit, "and is a mighty engine for good all over the world, but the newspaper that allows its open columns to be the vehicle for " envy, hatred, and malice, and all uncharitableness," does as much harm as m other re- - spectsit does good: • lam far from hintin jej that the " Manawatu Times " is of this character, for'it is indeed ably conducted, but I do say that a great injustice has been committed on an honorable Court by " Simplex," on whom I have called m vain alike to make good or retract his charges,, which I now, m conclusion, challenge him to lay at head qnarters for investigation. — I am, etc., Saxok.
