. TO THE EDITOH. SiE,-^rWoticing a letter m your last issue reflecting on the high prices charged by the jfalmerston storekeepers compared with those' of Fo^ton,il cannot let "Customer " pass; without Commenting upon his statements.. In the first place, I should like to know if he [ has taken into consideration the amount of freight upon small parcels up. to \ ton | from Fpxtori tp I*almerston : by railway. I will suppose that " Cristom'er" sends to Foxton for one bag of :;I;C. sugar ;weighing42lbs. According to his scale of Foxton prices this would cost 21/-, adding to this 4/3 for railway charges;; makes a total of 25/3. Now, he can and always could purchase at: the London House? Stores I.C. sugar, at, 6d per lb, thus saving the 4/3 freight. 1 .'.'* ■■>'-■'"•. ;'■■;'■ Apart frOin' the injury these false statements/ may; do local trade; I would also note that a false itnpression is given by such, correspondence .to thenaerchants with whom we deal in.Wellington or other places, aad they are led to believe that country storekeepers make f ar /greater. profits than thejjreally ' doi ; " ■ i. , *: . ■■' ■ ■ -J'la'- ■:■ The rates at which "Customer "avows . he can be supplied naturally lead a businessi inan:tp the . : question as to the class of dealer from whbni he \ rriakes^ '-his purchases arid also the extent of" his dealings, as it is quite possible that his quotations are made, not so much from an established storekeeper as" from soine Otheiv person: not permanently settled m business.
