The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 1877.

" Thistle's " conundrum shall receive a place in oar next. Communication on the Port Darwin line was restored on the 13th iust. A full report of the opening sale by Mr Q-. M. Snelaon at Mr W. Deards' Newmarket Sale Yards will appear in our nest issue. — Two drunkards were brought up on Thursday at the R. M. Court, Foxton. One was mulcted in the sum of ten shillings, and the other was dismissed with a caution. We notice by advertisement that DeputyEegistrars of - Dogs for the Manawatu County have been 'appointed at Sandon, Feilding, -Palm'erston North, Otaki, and Foxton. Mr E. S. Thynne will sell by auction today (Saturday), at his rooms, Foxton, at 2 o'clock, the stock-in-trade in "the bankrupt estate of J. S. Somei-s, consisting of tweeds and clothing, horses, saddles, household effects, &c, &3. - The desirable corner' half -acre, with tworoomed house, situated in New Chum Town, late the property of C. H. Trim is for sale, by order of the Public Trustee./ Application for purchase may be made to Mr Warburton, solicitor. * Constable Donnelly proceeded to Wellington last Thursday evening in charge of a prisoner named Charles Moore. It appears that Moore stole.a coat from Mr Abrahams' store, a day or two ago, and was" followed and given in charge by Mr Abrahams. He was afterwards taken to Foxton, and sentenced to two months' imprisonment in Wellington gaol. Up to a late hour yesterday evening the Masterton coach had not reached Pnlmerston. Owing to this delay Masterton letters cannot be delivered in Wanganui before Monday evening or Tuesday morning next, when they will be about eight days old, and recepients - will wonder why the^y should take so long a time to travel so short a distance. The delay is no doubt attributable to the swollen state of the rivers. _ The Secretary of the Board of Education notifies j, by advertisement in our present issue that the annual examination' of teachers for certificates, of assistant teachers,' of all pupil teachers, and of candidates seeking employment under the Board will be. held on the 4th and sth July next, in the following schoolhouses : — Thomdon School, Welliugton ; Grreytown ; Marton ; Foxton ; and Grammar School, Wanganui. We have to acknowledge the receipt of a letter dated from -Karere, oil the 28th ult.,' but which only reached our office on the 13th inst., conveying the information that W. Johnston, Esq., M.H.B. for this district, had -written to state that the petition sent in by the Jackeytown settlers to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works was under consideration, arid that the Engineer had received instructions to report upon the . same without delay ; and further, that the' .petitioners' might expect to hear of the re"suit in a few days.

The steamers Napier and Tui arrived at Foxton on Thursday uiornhig. The former left Wellington on Wednosdny evening, the latter left some days ago, but was unable to enter the harbor on siccount of the weather. The Napier left Foxton" again yesterday morning, and the Tui was to leave in the evening. We direct attention to advertisements in another column by Mr C. J. Pownall, who has commenced business as Landand Finance Agent., Mr Pownall has opened an office in Wellington, but we believe it is his intention to visit Palmerston frequently, and from his intimate acquaintance with- this district, together with his well-known business capabilities, we have no » doubt that he will be eminently successful in negotiations for the sale and purchase of .land and as a factor generally. ' We understand that Mr Pownall will be in Palmerston on the 22nd inst. • Rather a good thing^occurred at Foxfcon the other day. • An aboriginal Had been informed that he must register his kuri,* so made his appearance" at the office and dis- % played the utu, but 'before parting" with it asked if in the event of his "kuri dying or being lost would the County Council .pay what he considered to be its value. On being informed that the Council at present had not informed the .Registrar that theywould do so, this simple aboriginal returned the money to his pocket and saying Tenakoe, departed without registering his 'do'g-; said dog looked very consumptive. No doubt ' the energetic Deputy-Registrar who has the name of that Maori" will have that kuri, and then he will be duly registered under the Act. ' The 'footpaths in the Palmerston Square to the south of the railway line are now in a most miserable condition, and it is high time that something was done to render them more convenient- for pedestrians. A few loads of gravel and the filling Up of one or two hollows would be sufficient for the present, but the sooner this is done the better will it be for all pai'fcies concerned. We suppose that we must look to the Local Board for the performance of. this very necessary work, and we trust that body will n6t allow many days to elapse before taking the matter in hand. Very just complaint has been made by some of the residents on this side of the Square that whilst the wants of their neighbors on the opposite side have been attended to, nothing, or comparatively nothing, has been done by the Board towards improving the south side. The few portions^ of the pnth that may be" walked' 1 over with any degree of comfort during the present inclement weather have been made good by the. residents themselves, but they consider it rather too bad to. be compelled to do this sort of thing and pay rates as well. - • ' ■ Bishop Yaughan, oi New South. Wales, has determined that no professional or paid singers shall be allowed.in the choirs of the Catholic Church. 4 '
