Licensing Court.
The Commissioners present were^R. Ward, Esq., R.M. (Chairman), J. T. Stewart, Esq*, J.P.,E.. S. Thynne, Esq., J.P., and Dr. Rockstro, J.V. The following hotels had their licenses renewed- :— James Hastie, Halcombe Hotel. T. V. BroVn, Feilding Hotel. Charles Roe, Denbigh Hotel. Jos. Oakley, Junction Hotel, Sandon. A; J. Whyte, Whyte's Hotel. S. Tansley, Manawatu Hotel. - Charles Schultze, Awa Huri Hotel. In granting the license for the Manawatu Hotel, the ..Chairman said that althongh no actual report had been made, it had been mentioned to the Commissioners that the hotel had not been so well Conducted as it ought to be. He knew that there was great difficulty for- the landlord to contend with. He hoped that m future he would not have lo make any remarks. The proprietor of the Awa Hun Hotel applied to be allowed to have his license transferred to a new house •which he was up near his old hotel. " The Court adjourned until thejLSth July, to enable Mr Schultze m" the mean time to give the required notice, and to have the new premises finished. Mr Fallon applied for a license for the Foxton Family" Hotel through his Solicitor, Mr .McLean, who .said' the application was SL new one for an, old hotel, and m support of his application he would hand m a numerously signed requisition that the house was required. Mr'F,allon had been a bai*man m the old country, and also a clerk of works, under Mi; Baird who m tho certificate he had given him ,on leaving, said he had every reason to be satisfied with him, and the only reason ho left was on account of the wort he was m charge of being completed. Mi* McLean went on to say that a strong reason for the license buing granted was, that the old proprietor Mr Wakeford wanted to dis-
pose of the property, and it was much easier to do so when the house had a license. It was the oldest hotel m the district, and just lately a large amount of money had been expended m making it comfortable as an hotel. He believed that the Court had said on a former occasion that if a proper person applied for the license it would hs granccd, and he thought that his client was a p.cper person to Lave the license granted to. The Court retired for a' few uio.nents to consider the application,* and on returning the Chairman said that it was theopinion of the Commissioners that a third house was not required m Foxton at present. If at a future date they found another house requisite for the / accommodation of "the public they, would if an. application was put before them consider it. Mr McLean appeared on behalf of Messrs Hastie, Brown, Roe, Schultze, Whyte, and Fallon. • ,
