NEW TELEGRAPH APPARATUS.
Some time ago there was brought under the notice of (he Society of Arts a new apparatus for telegraphic signalling called the " Autokinetie." We have received an ilhioi rated sheet of figures wiih copious explanations, and from which we ga'hor that the object of ibis now invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive system by which any number of police or fii'i 1 stations, mills, banks, or private residences may be able to communicate wiih a central staiion by the same wire, without interfering with one another. We believe there is not any oilier system m telegraphy by which this can bo done. The inventor goes so far as to sugg.-st that electricity should be laid on as universally as gas and water now are. The Autokinetic is recommended as being simple. Any person not possessing a knowledge of telegraphy can send the signals ; the messages arc printed on , the Morse system. Clearness and certainty m despatch, and freedom from errors or confusion m case more t! :••!'■! one staiion or house use the wire at i '■■■.• same time, may be considered the <■■-- ■ senee of Ihe system. It has n!--> econony to recommend it for a ti;.;i. tind can be adapted for a variety ofp'!. - poses. One of the figures represent :■ policeman sending a message to tii' police station of the special occurrences which he notes m his district by mean-' of underground wires attached to a pillar box, m which is inserted a telegraphic instrument, each policeman on duty having access by means of a key. Arrangements are also made by which the instrument is made to register the hour at which the policeman ought to report himself on the beat, and thus enable the superintendent at the station to see the condition of each police beat m the entire district, registered at stated periods night and day. Another illustration is a fireman, who m the vicinity of a fire, has removed an iron box on the footpath, uncovered the tube, and attached to the general line of wire two auxiliary wires, "and by a small apparatus which can be carried m his bolt, he can telegraph the progress of the fire to all the stations m the town. Messages sent along the wires attached to the autokinetic simultaneously are printed off m regular succession with exactness, and as the time which is occupied m the despatch is only three or four seconds, therefore, although several pillars, stations, factories, &c, call at the same moment, each message is promptly attended to m quick rotation, and without confusion. The apparatus is automatic. If the wires should [ happen to be occupied by one house ! while another is calling, the message does not require to be repeated, but passes along so soon as the line is clear, and directly each communication is delivered the button afc the centre turns and lifts up :uj indicator to show that the message has been duly received at its destination. We are informed that several scientific men have judged the autokinetic the greatest novelty m telegraphy of the age. Lieutenant -Colonel • Sir James M. Hogg, X.C.8., M.P, chairman of the. Metropolitan Board of Works, has brought it under the notice of the Fire Brigade Committee m London, and it is now under consideration. Mr Irvine D. Mitchell, 1 and 3, North Street, by desire of the inventors, drew the attention of our Town Council to this apparatus, and they have requested our excellent superintendent of the Fire Brigade, Mr George A. Reilly, to report thereon. — Belfast paper.
