CHRISTCHURCH.

Wednesday. The magisterial work at Christ-church has become so heavy that Mr Whiteford R.M. at Kaiapoi has been, appointed assistant Resident Magistrate. At a meeting qf the shareholders of the Permanent Investment Association} it transpired that the defalcations of Herdson, late chief clerk, amounted to nearly £6000 instead of £600 as previously stated. The defalcations extended over a period of five years, during part of which time the association held a guarantee policy for £1000 m the Australian Alliance Company, but as the claim under it had not been made, as required, within three months of expiration of policy, the company refuse to pay it. This was unfavorably commented on at the meeting. The question of sending a detective to arrest Herdson, who is living near San Francisco, was left to the decision of the directors.
