PUBLIC MEETING
The public meeting held at Mr Baker's, residenc, on Monday night, was well attended. Mr W. MoDouall was voted to the Chair. The resolutions hereunder stated were unanimously carried. Mr D. P. Walkeb proposed, and Mr Baker seconded, " That in the opinion of this meeting, No. 5 Ward, in the Manawatu Highways Board is not satisfied with the duties at present performed by the Board's Inspector, who, on accouut of the multifarious offices he holds, feel certain that the various duties undertaken by him are badly performed, and that he is not competent to supervise the laying out and construction of roads and bridges, and would suggest that the Board take into consideration the matter of obtaining a competent person to superintend the various works for the Board." Proposed by Mr Morris, seconded by Mr Allerby, " That this meeting strongly objects to the present system of allowing paid servants of the Board to neglect the duties of their own Board while receiving pay for and attending to the duties of other Boards." Prouosed by Mr Morris, seconded by Mr D? D. Walker, " That this meeting considers that Mr Linton is not a fit and proper person to assess this district, and deprecates his reappointmeut as Assessor by the Board." Proposed by Mr Rogers, seconded by Mr D. D. Walker, " That this meeting strongly objects to the appointment of an assessor without submitting it to public competition." Proposed by Mr Brogden, seconded by Mr S. Eogers, " That this meeting trusts that the ratepayers of other Wards will consider the resolutions passed by this meeting, and express their opinion thereon." ' Proposed by Mr D. D. Walker, seconded by Mr Plyger, " That a deputation consisting of Messrs McDouall, Morris, and Brogden, wait on Mr McNeil, member for the Ward to hear his views on the subject and ask him to present the above resolutions to the Board." After a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting terminated.
