March 9. In consequence of the Eden County Councillors refusing to show the minute of agreement with the Bank of Australasia for a loan, the councillor m question threatened legal proceedings. Other councillors then consented to show the minute. ' " ; ; Mr Whitaker, m reply to a deputation, said the Government will shortly open land at the Thames district for settlement. The Railway Commissioners reported m favor of reclaiming a portion of the harbor between Point Britomart and the wharf, so as to extend the railway to the wharf and establish a central station. They also recommend that tickets should be sold m shops, cheap Saturday and Sunday trains, and increased facilities for country settlers. Dr. Pollen goes to Wellington with his family to-morrow, and afterwards proceeds to Napier ; thence to Taupo to meet Rewi on the 20th. A deputation waited on Dr. Pollen today and presented a resolution of Eden County Council requesting him to push on the railway. Tuesday. Sailed — Rotorua for Sydney, with 80 passengers, The German war ship Augusta has arrived. She steams 14 knots, and is armed with ten Krupp guns. A large number of passengers have booked per City of New York, including Emmett and family, and Chinese giants. Considerable damage has been done to the Bay of Islands railway by late rains. Thomas Russell remains only a short time m Auckland. Thomas Newton, a Waterloo hero, aged 76, died m the hospital. The question of hanging up the Counties Act is exciting, considerable public feeling m the Eden County. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board to-day, Vesey Stewart intimated his acceptance of the Board's terms for the purchase of ten thousand acres adjoining the Katikati settlement. The Board consented to extend the time for payment to Ist September if required. Returns show that 78,539 acres m the Thames Qounty are under the administration of the Board. The first trial of the waterworks, made with rain water accumulated m the reservoir, was made to-day. A jet of water was thrown by the fire brigade over a three-storey warehouse m Queenstreet. Mr Tole, M.H.R., addressed his constituents last night. He received a unanimous vote of confidence. The Acclimatization Society agreed to recommend the Government to fix the time for the commencement of the shooting season m the North Island on the 25th May to end of July.
