CORRESPONDENCE.

[Our correspondence column being open. no responsibility can be accepted m respect to opinions expressed by correspondents.]

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — My reply to " Fair Play" is that his unbiased imagination misleads him when he supposes that I ever stated what he asserts m your columns. I beg to refer him again to my letter, where he will find, after a more careful reading, that I never stated our County Chairman had been appointed valuer for the County. I stated that he was appointed the valuer for the Manawatu district at £90 per annum, and my information is entirely confined to the report I read m the Manawatu Times of the appointment, which report shows how the correspondence was conducted between the Board and Mr Thynne by telegraph, and that his offer to do the valuation for £90 was. accepted by the Board. (See Manawatu Times for October or November last for this report.) I have denied stating that the County Council appointed Mr Thynne its valuer, but I am told by more than one person that the County Council has accepted its Chairman's valuation of the Manawatu district, and will also repay the Manawatu district one-half of the amount it is paying, or has paid to the Chairman of the County Council for this valuation. I beg to assure " Fair Play" that it was only his own pretensions to bonny play that prompted me to write at all on a matter m which I take very little interest, either one way or another, except that I like to read the correspondence m the "open column," and I trust that those who take some interest m our County proceedings, will not be prevented from expi'essing their views m the same temperate way that they have generally done on this subject. Thanking you for allowing me the space you have done. — I am, &c, Foul Play.
