j Wednesday. | At Ngaruawhia, a man named Samuel V Morgan was murdered by a Maori named Te Puni, who is m the lock-up. Morgan has lived with the King natives v I as a Pakea-maori, and was driven put sj by the Kingites, and a few days ago sentenced to imprisonment, by th^Besident Magistrate for Tagran*g&f). A 4 witness from Waikato proved excessive j charges on freight of timber.: f Latef. I Morgan's murderer was captured through the instrumentality of the tele- H" fraph. Warden Hobson discovered \\ is escape about half-past nine last i night. The murderer killed Morgan I with a tomahawk which he had been working with, and "which was concealed m the bed clothes. He cleft his skull ■: and cut his throat, then broke a window | and escaped. He stole Detective I Doolan's horse and saddle, also a fowl- j ing piece. The telegraphist at Ngarua-^ wahia succeeded m arousing the tele- * graphist at Alexandra, and all avenues •. ■ of escape on the frontier were guarded X by the police and volunteers. The murderer was captured this morning, % thirty miles distant from JSTgaruawahia, | by Constable McLean. 111-feeling ex- : isted between the prisoners. The gaol at Ngaruawahia is notoriously insecure. . " An inquest was begun to-day. Morgan.^ arrived m the colony twenty years ago, j and has lived most of the time as a ] Pakeha-Maori. He was married to a half-caste, by whom he had twelve children. /
