The Nelson " Mail " says—" It does not of ten happfenythat a large; sum^of money is placbd' in the Bank' ahd-al-lowedto lie there foryears until its existence becomes alinbst 7 forgotten, "and il only brought to light by an accident, yet such has. taken place m- Nelson: In. the year 1860, the great Maori outbreak" at Taranaki occurred, sMd, XAin; 'coqsbt : \\ quence of the danger to which they were exposed, the wives and families of: a large number of the settlers were compelled to leave ;their ; homes and; take refuge m Nelson. The state of almost destitution to which they were reduced evoked a large , amount of sympathy here, which -assumed; a practical form m shape of a subscription which was raised to meet their most pressing wants, and to which the "Nelson public, ever, ready to relieve distress, contributed largely, the result- being: that a sum of between £600 and £700 was collected and placed m the Bank to the credit of certain trustees who were elected to administer the fund. ■':.'
