VICHY DESTROYER LOST

GOVERNMENT REFUSAL.

VICHY, Oct. 2

The Vichy destroyer Audacieuse was lost in last week’s fighting at Dakar.

Per Press Association

AUCKLAND, Oct. 3,

Dissatisfaction at the Government’s refusal to permit American vessels to carry cargo between New Zealand and Australia or Fiji was expressed by the council of the Chamber of Commerce to-day when a letter, replying to the representations, was received from tho Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb). It stated that that it -was not a question of temporary expediency but a principle of vital concern for the protection of British shipping. Mr A. G. Lunn said the boats available to carry such cargo were those of a nation that was proving itself Britain’s greatest friend. This should be pointed out to the Minister. The council decided to write to the Prime Minister requesting consideration of the matter.
