DEMAND FOR BASES.

ITALY PRESSES SYRIA

LONDON, Sept. 29. Further evidence is forthcoming of tlie increasing pressure ■ which, Italy is exerting on the Vichy Government authorities in Syria. A Reuter message from Cairo today outlined a fresh series of Italian demands as follows

(l) The use of Tripoli as an Italian naval base.

(2) The grounding at Rhodes, in the Dodecanese Islands, for the duration of the war, of all French aircraft at present in Syria. (3) The handing over of two aitbases in Syria and the Lebanon.

(4) The complete demobilisation of the French forces in Syria, except the police. While the French authorities have already refused to fly their aircraft to Rhodes, their response to the other Italian demands is not known.

The rise of the Syrian port of Tripoli would allow Italian warships as well as aircraft to base their operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, only about 150 miles from the British hases in Cyprus and 300 miles from Suez.
