NANETTE NOTICES
HERE AND THERE
(By “Nanette.”)
The Little Singer. We read of a little girl of six who was nursing her doll and singing during an air-raid. “And what did you do when you heard the bang;'” she was asked. “I just went on singing,” she said.
Practical and Pretty. One of the most popular and useful fashions this year is for twin sets. They are particularly suitable for file informal wear adopted by most people these days. Just opened at the fcjcotch Wool and Hosiery Shop, the Square, is a new range of juniper and cardigan sets in rose, spring green, petrel, powder blue, red, wine, prune, and clover, SW and W sizes. ' * Ironing Hints. A few drops of paraffin added to starch immediately it is made will prevent the iron from sticking to the garments-. If you have to leave an electric iron in the middle of your work, don’t forget to switch it off, but place a teacosy over the iron and it will keep hot a long while. October Brides.
For lovely bridal gowns in individual styles you could find no more satisfactory place than Slater’s, the Square. They take a special interest in bridal wear and have an expert fitter to make final adjustments and they lend an exquisite veil, arranged to any desired headdress, to purchasers of bridal gowns. Going away suits and other trousseau necessities are also their specialties. * Mary Stuart’s Shoe. Antiques, especially those with a personal connection, are always interesting. At an informal exhibition held in Wellington by the English-speaking Union, recently, one of the most fascinating objects was a shoe, more than 400 years old, that had belonged to Mary Queen of Scots. It was made of linen carefully embroidered all over in fine stitching and with a high leather heel, the whole being hand-made. Furs For Spring. Furs give a smart finish to a tailored suit or a plain spring coat. Either a necklet or a short cape will be found useful in a variety of ways for any time of day. Grey is fashion’s favourite shade this spring and H. H. Blandford’s, Coleman Place, have delightful grey squirrel as well as many other attractive furs. *
Saving a Bucket. Don’t throw away your pail if it has some small holes at the bottom; it can' be made as good as new at a very small cost. Turn the pail upside down and give it a coat of enamel on the bottom and, while it is still wet, spread over a piece of calico cut to the right shape. Then apply a second coat of enamel and when this has dried the pail will hold either hot or cold water. An Important Point. It’s extraordinary, considering modern health standards and facilities for beauty, how few women have a really clear and lovely complexion. A good skin is a most important feature and will compensate for other defects not. so easily remedied. There are wonderfully effective treatments for toning and softening the skin and removing impurities, given by Sylvia Ixirk, the beauty expert, Broadway. *
Old World Posies. At the Dominion Day meeting of the Early Settlers’ and Historical Association, in Wellington, guests were presented on arrival with fragrant posies and boutonnieres of Old World flowers made by Mrs Jt. Cole, who has taken this pleasant task upon herself for the gatherings of the past ten years. As a result the room was Fragrant w r ith the warm perfumes of wallflower, mignonette, primroses, heather, and many other of the lovely old-fashioned Hoovers still treasured in pioneer gardens.
