WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
MEETING AT WAIATA
The Waiata Women’s Institute celebrated its eighth birthday at the home of Mrs. McLeod. Mrs McLeod (president) extended a very hearty, welcome to all present, including a large number of visitors. The beautiful birthday cake was made by Mrs Bailey and iced by Mrs Simpson. Mrs Stanley, of Apiti. lit the candles, Mrs McCorkindale blew them out and Mrs B. Short cut - the cake, all three wishing the institute well,. Greetings were also received from the Cheltenham, Colyton, Makino and Apiti institutes. Pretty shoulder sprays were presented to Mesdames Short, Stanley and McCorkindale, all three being members of the Oroua federation. A playette was given by members of the institute and was much enjoyed, those taking part being Mesdames Vautier, Miller, Redshaw, and Misses Woodman and Redshaw. Mrs Short presented the points prizes won for the year, the winners being: Mrs Redshaw 1, Mrs Chambers 2, Mrs Simpson 3.'Mrs Stanley, of Apiti, gave an interesting talk on women’s war work in Portsmouth in the Great War. Two written competitions were held, the first being won by Mrs Shorthall 1, Mrs Morphy 2 and Mrs Chambers 3; second competition, Mrs Mulholland 1, Mrs Chambers and Mrs Redshaw, equal, 2, and Mrs Miers 3 ; best bloom, Mrs Turner 1, Mrs Redshaw 2, Mrs Bailey 3.
AWAHURI INSTITUTE
Mrs Haythorno presided over the September meeting of the Women’s Institute and welcomed Mrs Parkes, who had come at very short notice to speak about her recent trip, also thanking Mrs Poananga for bringing Mrs Parkes from Palmerston North. Final arrangements were made in connection with the flower show to be held next month for members only. Delegates appointed to attend the half-yearly council meeting of the Oroua Federation are Mesdames Haythorne and Ol'arrell; Mrs Christian consented to take charge of the Christmas parcels which are to be brought to the October meeting for the leper appeal. Competitions resulted: Flowers, Miss MacCallum 1, Mrs Goqdman 2, Mrs Bond 3; something new from something old (the garments being given to the sewing guild for tho refugee box), Mrs Port l.Mrs Christian 2, Mrs Bond 3. Next month a competition will be held for the best knitted balaclava, and the articles are to be given to the sewing guild. Members were privileged to hear a very interesting talk about the Far East in conriection with . Mr 9 Parker s recent trip abroad and also heard something of the black-outs in London. The hostesses were Mrs Cole, Miss MacCallum and Mrs Rcdmayne.
