PAST AND PRESENT PLAYERS

WELLINGTON BEAT MANAWATU.

Rugby representative players, past and present, from Wellington and the Manawatu, met in a good encounter at the Showgrounds on Saturday which resulted in favour of the former team by the narrow margin of one point. The match was in aid of patriotic funds. As a curtain-raiser, teams comprising representatives of former years from the Palmerston North and Feilding districts met, and the honours were shared. CENTURIONS v. EVERGREENS.

Tb e main match, between the Centurions (Wellington) and Evergreens (Manawatu), produced football which could he favourably compared with that of representative standard. Wellington Centurions. —H. E. Greig, C. Graham, C. Cave, C. Parsloe, Davies, Cooney, T. Dwyer, E. T. Bydder, Lewin, S. Evans, J. C. Hodgson, K. Guy, P. Ward, J. Lamason, M. M. Cooper (captain). Manawatu Evergreens.—M. Dormer, H. Waugh, A. Stewart. D. Biiick, ,J. Thomas, J. Nicol, C. Edlin, E. Fell, I. Dustin, B. Sullivan, It. McKenzie (captain), W. Powell, A. Williams, B. O’Uea, T. Newman. The Manawatu Scottish Society’s Pipe Band led the teams on to the field and the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) kicked off. Early in the game, Irom a line-out, Waugh secured and ran upheld to pass to Williams, who scored near the posts. Edlin converted. Soon after Wellington were awarded a ireo kick from just inside the halfway line and Lamason sent the ball between the posts. The home-forwards worked hard to hold their two-point lead, and as the result of a forward rush McKenzie was able to pass infield to Waugh, who scored well out. Powell failed to add the extra points.

Soon after the resumption Wellington were awarded a penalty and Lewin kicked a fine goal. The Manawatu team I seemed to have tired and the visitors kept play deep in the 'home side’s territory. From a set scrum Hodgson cut in beautifully to. score and Lamason converted. Hodgson scored another try after evading the Manawatu fullback, but Lamason failed with the kick. With only ten minutes to go Manawatu made a desperate effort and were able to add three more points to their tally when Stewart kicked a penalty goal. 'The final whistle went with the score: Centurions 12, Evergreens 11. Mr It. Y T oung was the referee. In tbe curtain-raiser between the Manawatu and Feilding past representative players Feilding led 5-ml at half-time, Wilson having scored a try which M. Bowler converted. Before the final whistle M. Waldin scored an unconverted try for the visitors. Ihe home team’s points came from a penaltv try awarded to Gillespie and a try scored bv K. S. Glenrlinning which L. Mullins converted. The final score was 8-all. Mr Doherty was the referee.
