“One-of the greatest battles in the world's history is now being fought, not only between our own and the enemy’s air forces, but between the German air force and the men and women of Britain,” declares Mr Herbert Morrison (Minister of Supply) iu a message to workers in arms factories.
“I have the honour to lead one division of our civilian army—workers in arms factories —and to them I issue this Order of the Day: You are frontline fighters in the battle for freedom. More than that, you are shock troops, for while the Nazi barbarians rain down their bombs on our people yours is the proud task of counter-at-tack.
“Alone among the troops of our civilian army, you can do more than suffer and endure in grim patience — you can hit hack! You ore the men and women of whom Hitler is afraid, liecause your hands are forging the weapons of victory. “Stand to your jobs! Then victory will crown your efforts!’’ declares Mr Morrison.
The Lord Mayor of London states that £160,000 contributed to the Air Raid fund has already been distributed. The fund is now in the neighbourhood of £750,000. The city of Durban (South Africa) has sent another £14,851, bringing the total contribution to date to over £34,000; £25,000 has also been received from the Mayor of Johannesburg.
