PERSONAL.
A study of taxation, particularly land taxation, in New Zealand, is to be made by Dr. J. H. Gilbert, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at Oregon University, United States. Dr. Gilbert has already spent a month on a similar study in Australia. Flight-Lieutenant A. C. McArthur and Mr E. Caradus, director of educational services to the Itoyal New Zealand Air Force, are visiting Palmerston North as members of the Air Force Selection Committee, which is sitting for two days at this centre. Pilot-Officer R. Porter, formerly of Palmerston North, was unable to take bis seat on the committee to-day owing to a slight indisposition. Flying-Officer B. J. G. Carbury, who left Auckland in April, 1937, to join the Royal Air Force, and who has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, is the. eldest son of the late "Mrs A. D. Carbury. and a grandson of Mrs and the late Mr G. W. Thirkell, of Oriental Bay, Wellington. FlyingOfficer Carbury was educated at the Te Aroba School, the New Lynn School, and King’s College, Auckland. His interests included tennis, swimming and cycle racing. He won several cups for cycling.'
