ENTERTAINMENTS
KOSY THEATRE
“RAWHIDE.”
The bark of six-shooters and the crack of baseball bats are harmonised with colourful/ range melodics in “Rawhide,” _ a new 20th Century-Fox release, co-starring Smith Ballew and Lou Gehrig, showing to-day at the Kosy Theatre. The story is one of bare-fisted adventure and cyclonic action in the rough, tough Arizona cattlelands. To the tune of rollicking range ballads, Lou Gehrig, baseball idol, and Smith Ballew, singing cowboy, team to wipe out the most dangerous band of range racketeers over to invade the West. Evalyn Knapp, Arthur Loft and Si Jenks are also featured in the film.
The release by Twentieth Century-Fox of the new musical smash hit, “You Can’t Have Everything,” showing to-day at tho Kosy Theatre, brings to the screen one of the largest casts of featured entertainment specialists ever assembled for a single picture, Alice Faye, the Ritz Brothers, and Don Ameclie get top billing, and tho cast is headed by Charles Winninger, Louise Hovick, Rubinoff and his violin, and Tony Martin. Other sure-fire entertainers are Arthur Treacher, Phyllis Brooks, Tip, Tap and Toe, Louis Prima and his band, and Tyler Brooke. Music and lyrics by tho ace song-writing team of Mack Gordon and Harry Revel add increased stature to this already enticing list of amusement specialists.
REGENT THEATRE
“YOUNG TOM EDISON.”
All suspicion that Mickey Rooney is strictly an unusual personality rather than an actor will vanish when “Young Tom Edison” is seen at the Regent Theatre. Playing the great inventor as a youth. Mickey clearly establishes himself in tho ranks of Hollywood’s “fop notchers.” The picture tells a vivid story of the triumph of a typical boy and is so down-10-earth and human that it will bring a warm glow in the heart of many a boy and former boy and a tear to the eye of every sister and mother in the audience. There is a generous portion of comedy in tho story, comedy which Rooney does -to perfection , because it is genuine uoyhood comedy. And the story lias its dreams, its tears, its thrills and, above all, its triumphs—the sort that brings an exultant lump into your throat, Mickey, of course, is superb, directed by the genius of childhood story director, Norman Taurog. The man who made “Skippy” certainly has topped the Academy winning effort of a few years ago. The cast with Rooney is outstanding. First, there is Virginia Weilder, who again proves she’s Hollywood’s leading child actress. As Edison’s sister she is a superb teammate fer Mickey. Fay Bainter is a perfect selection as Edison’3 mother and is magnificent. Georg© Bancroft playing Edison’s father, has a role totally unlike anything she has ever done and one which may well spell “new career” lor this grand actor. Eugene Pallettc, .Victor Kilian, Bobbie,Jordan, J. M. Kerrigan, Lloyd Corigan, John Kellog, Clem Bevans, Eily Malyon and Harry Shannon round out an excellent supporting cast.
