FIGHTER AEROPLANES

LOCAL FUND CLOSED.

QUOTA EXCEEDED

With the quota of £2OOO for Palmerston North city and the Kairanga county having been exceeded, the local fund for the buying of fighter aeroplanes for Britain closed on Saturday, Additional contributions have, however, been received since the quota- was raised, and the present total stands at £2026 2s 6d.

The local fund, it will be recalled, was inaugurated through the “Manawatu Standard” a month ago, when the list was opened by a generous donation of £SO by Mr C. J. Adams. A local committee was set up at a public meeting to control the fund, when the district’s quota, was set at £2OOO. Of this amount a fine contribution was the sum of £IOOO, given from the commercial travellers’ patriotic fund. The amount received by the “Standard” was £266 17s. A total of £IOO,OOO for the whole of New Zealand was the amount allowed by. the Government to be forwarded to buy aeroplanes, this gesture expressing the appreciation of the people of New Zealand of the efforts of the Royal Air Force against tho enemy. Not only has Palmerston North’s quota been exceeded, but numerous other centres have also raised more than the required amounts. The aeroplanes purchased with the money from New Zealand will, it is expected, be named after the main districts where the money was raised. Mr Adams expressed the wish, when making the original contribution here, that the aeroplane purchased with local money should he called Manawatu, but at that time he suggested £SOOO as the total of the local fund. , , . Further donations are acknowedged as follow: „ , £ s: d.

VICTIMS OF BOMBING. Now that the local Fighter Plane Fund has been subscribed, voluntary donations are already being received for the aid of victims of the Nazi lximbing of London. The list, the committee states, is to be officially, opened on Friday next, after a meeting on Thursday, and in the meantime preliminary steps are being put in hand for the campaign. -
