Mr 37. F. Stihvell,. S.M., and Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., are visitors to Palmerston North tor the golf tournament at present being held by members of the legal fraternity. A cablegram from London reports the death of Sir Denison Ross, the antiquarian, aged "69. He was formerly Professor of Persian at London University and Assistant-Secretary for Education, in India.
After a notable career in provincial journalism and in radio broadcasting, Mr John Ball, station manager of 2YA since its foundation, has retired. At a farewell gathering at the week-end, Mr Ball was presented with an extensive cutlery set and with a fountain pen. The Director of the National Broadcasting Service (Professor Shelley) spoke highly of Mr Ball’s work.
Good wishes for an early and complete recovery by Mr J. Galland, who has been in hospital, were expressed by the Mayor (Mr A. E. Hansford) in declaring open the annual daffqdil show of the Palmerston North Horticultural Society on Saturday. Mr Hansford said all those connected with the show knew what a tower of strength Mr Galland was to it as the secretary, and all 'hoped that he would soon- be restored to his usual health to take his normal part in it again. The death has occurred in Dannevirke of Mr Manning Woodlands Hartgill. a well-known and respected settler of the Akitio district. Mr. Hartgill, who was the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs W. H. Hartgill, was educated at Wanganui College. He took up farming and except for a short time at Te Pohue had lived at Akitio. He was closelv associated with many sporting activities and was prominent in tennis and golfing circles. He served on the Dannevirke Borough Council. He is survived bv his widow and three, sons. Mr J. E. Hartgill, who is on active service overseas, and Messrs W. H. and P. Hartgill, of Akitio; and ■ one daughter. Miss Cecilia Hartgill. Colonel W. C. Hartgill, R.A.M.C., -England, and Mr G. Hartgill, of the instructional staff of the - Air Force, Weraroa, are brothers, and Mrs N. P. Green, of Tauranga, and Mrs E. D. Warburton, of Kiwitea, are sisters.
