FOXTON.
A social gathering was held in St. Mary’s schoolroom when a large number of friends gathered to welcome home Father N. M. Foley, who, owing to sickness, has been absent from Foxton for five months. The opportunity • was also taken to farewell Fatjier Bourke, who has been in charge of the Foxton-Shannon parish during Father Foley’s absence. Entertainment was provided by the Convent School pupils, Helen Barry. Mr Tworney, Miss K. Bergin and Millicent Bowden. Mr M. B. Bergin, on behalf of the parishioners, extended- a warm welcome to Father Foley and expressed the pleasure felt by all at his return to health. Mr Bergin called on Father Foley to accept a presentation, which carried with it the very best wishes pf his parishioners. Father Bourke was also the recipient of a gift. Mr Bergin thanking him for the very capable manner in which he had managed the affairs of the parish during his sojourn in Foxton. Both recipients acknowledged the gifts. Subsequently a dance was held. The Foxton Women’s Emergency Corps continues to do good work and in the past few days members have packed numerous Christinas parcels for the men overseas. At the annual -meeting of tile Foxton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club the election of officers resulted: —Patron. Mr W. E. Ilale; president, Mr B. Hinds; vice-presidents, Messrs 0. F. Smith, A. Evans, J. F. Grant, 11. Dustin and Dr. S. E Crawford; committee, Messrs R. if ay dock, J. Raupi, IT. D. Dawson, L. Stevens and D. R. Barron ; treasurer, Mr C. Dustin; secretary. Mr R. Simpson ; assistant secretary, Mr W. J. Neville; auditor, Mr E. T. Jackson; delegate to cycling and running centres, Mr J. Devonshire; club captain, Mr IT. Wright; advisory members, Messrs L. Irons (running), E. Lucinsky (cycling). Miss I. Coley (basketball), and Miss D. Raupi (lady runners). The resignation of Mr H. Wright was received as handieapper for the cycling events and Mr W. J. Neville was appointed to fill the vacancy, with Mr Hinds as handieapper for the running events. Mr 11. D. Dawson was appointed starter. Mrs J. R .Middleton presided at a meeting of the Women’s Institute, when new mein hers elected were Mcsdamcs Melton and Chanpcll and Miss 11. Skellon. Mrs W. R. Byne and Miss S. Lapworth tendered their resignations as secretary and treasurer, respectively, the former through lack of time to devoto lo the work and the latter on account of her departure from Foxton. Mrs F. Gay was elected secretary and' Mrs J. Wilson treasurer. Mrs T. E. Hughes was elected to the committee to fill the position vacated by Mrs J. S. Shorthouse. A demonstration on the spinning of wool from the) flccco was given by Mrs Pi-ouse. of Levin. Mrs Middleton presented Mrs Prouse with a dainty posy ■as a token of appreciation. The competition lor hand-made slippers was won by Mrs F. Procter.
