7TLETING OF COUNCIL. At tho monthly meeting of the Kiwiten. County Council yesterday, Cr. W. P. 1 Shaw presided owing to tho absence of Cr L. T. McLean, and other members present were Crs I). T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, A. S. D’Ath, J. it. Williamson, D. Stent, A. E. Shannon and E. E. Tappin. The Public Works Department advised payment of subsidies on the maintenance of Main Highways (£924 8s 4d) and the Davis’s cutting improvements (£300). Cr Williamson reported on the conference of local bodies held in Palmerston North, regarding the formation of the Emergency Deserve Corps. The Valuation Department advised payment of balance of subsidy on general rates (1939-40) amounting to £478 14s. The district engineer of tho Public Works Department, forwarded details of the main highways annual estimates for the current year, as follows:- —No. 52, Awahuri-Mangaweka, via Kimbolton, maintenance £1766, (subsidy £3 for £1) ; ltangiwahia township, sealing (on account) £94, similar subsidy; No. 53, Kimbolton-Apiti, maintenance £1077 (£3 for £1) ; Davis’s cutting improvements, £716 (£3 for £1) ; No. 553, Cheltenliam-McKay’s Line, maintenance £153, reconstruction and sealing work, on account £132 (£3 for £1) ; Iviwitea Stream bridge £IBO4 (£3 for £1). The monthly report of the traffic inspector was received. The county clerk intimated that last months the names of nine persons prepared to take British children had been forwarded to the town clerk in Palmerston North. Since then there had been no further applications. A letter was received from the Treasury acknowledging the council’s application for a loan of £IO,OOO for the purpose of financing tho erection of dwellings for farmers and farm workers. The Treasury advised that the application was being investigated and in due course would be submitted to the Loans Board for consideration. Mr Hesseltine reported that there had been seven applications lodged for loans under the rural housing scheme. HATE COLLECTIONS.

The treasurer (Mr W. L. Hesseltine) reported on rate payments as follows: General: Paid, £3439 17s 2d; outstanding, £4760 3s lid. Special rates: Paid, £i/29 6s sd; outstanding, £1619 12s iOd. Hospital rates: Paid, £1835 Its lid; outstanding, £2538 Is yd. Arrears (3yrs).—General rates: Paid, £lO5 17s; owing, £BO 19s 3d: Special: Paid, £34 10s od; owing, £2B_ 4s 7d. Hospital rate: Paid, £52 15s lid; owing, £4l. It was stated that the 5 per cent, rebate on general rates paid bad resulted in £6005, having been received compared with £5327 last year. The schedule of bank balances as at yesterday’s date, was presented' as follows: —County fund account, dr., £1502 0s lid; employees’ accommodation special loan, cr., £323 5s Id; Kimbolton Cemetery account, cr., £6 6s 10d; lund fund account, No. 2, cr., £137 19s; ltangiwahia Cemetery account, cr., £9 3s 8d; salo of loan assets account, cr., £375; Waituiia Cemetery account, cr., £ll 19s 9d. The treasurer stated that the overdraft would be further reduced by £BOO as subsidy payment in connection with the new bridge at the Cheltenham Cross Road and £ISOO expected as an advance subsidy on general rates. These amounts are expected in the near future. It was decided to co-operate with the Oroua County Council and the Eeilding Borough Council in connection with the emergency precautions scheme. In his report on tho roads Mr J. Hallman, overseer, referred to the activities of tho grader and the amounts of maintenance metal placed on the various routes. Between Cheltenham and. Kimbolton new drains had been cut. No fewer than 600 cubic yards of . metal had been delivered in the Waituiia riding. New school traffic signs had been erected at the Beaoonsficld School and bridges in the county repaired and painted. Throughout the county, road watertables had been cleaned out, potholes filled in. and dangerous corners cut hack.
