CONTROL OF SCHOOLS

EDUCATION BOARD. STAFF CHANGES. Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, yesterday. Other members present were: Messrs W. H. Brown, W. G. Black, J. W. Batchelar, I. W. Mudford, N. Annabel, J. C. Batfc L. Bailey, P. Munro, and J. E. R. Wallace. Among the staff changes were tlie following.—Teachers leaving the board’s service: Mr G. IT. Prince, assistantmaster, Lytton Street; Mrs I. M*. Kensington, assistant-mistress, Longburn; Miss N. Hannam, member of relieving staff. Appointed to other positions in the board’s service : Mr T. H. Attwood, head teacher, Bainesse; Mr K. M. White, assistant-master, Palmerston North Central; Mr W. V. Hobin, assistant-master, Russell Street; Mr K. B. Dawkins, assistant-master, West End; Miss C. L. Curry, senior assistantmistress, College Street; Miss L. H. Waters, senior assistant-mistress, West End; Miss K. C. Coup, assistantmistress, College Street; Miss P. L. Ross, assistant-mistress, College Street; Miss J. M. Wellwood, assistantmistress, Terrace End; Mr R. A. Robbie, instructor in agriculture. Appointments made: Mr C. C. Brain, woodwork and metalwork instructorj Palmerston North Intermediate; Mr C. B. Dredge, woodwork and metal instructor, Palmerston North Intermediate; Miss D. G. Anderson, domestic science instructress, Palmerston North Intermediate; Miss C. R. Montgomery, domestic science instructress, Palmerston North Intermediate; Mr J, J, Donald, secondary assistant, Foxton District High School. The Education Department notified an administration grant of £3305 13s, a decrease of £37 13s, due to a decreased roll of 251.

Messrs Batchelar and Mudford, with the architect, reported on action taken in connection with ground improvement to the new school site at Halcombe. The Education Department notified a £ for £ subsidy for the erection of a swimming pool at Longburn. The department also notified approval of a subsidy, of £4 per manweek for four men' for 13 weeks for levelling and grading the Russell Street School grounds. The department declined to grant £l7 for topdressing and seed. Mr Black reported that the Russell Street committee was concerned about what supervision would be given this work, and the board decided to ask the Public Works Department to provide an overseer, or tailing that, tho City Council. A subsidy of £2O for asphalting was granted the Sanson School Committee, and a grant of £2O was made the TJtuwai committee for concreting work. Approval was given for the holding of Bible reading from 2.40, to 3 p.m. on the first Weunesday of each month at the Dirndly School. An alteration in the Foxton District High School lunch hour to minimise risk of accidents to children came from the Foxton Borough Council and was referred to the school committee' and headmaster. The Education Department declined the beard’s renewed application for consolidation of Carnarvon School with Rongotea. The department suggested that if reasonable arrangements could be made for the education of the Bainesse children, consolidation with Rangiotu should not be proceeded with. The board decided to grant the use of school' grounds to the Home Guard as parade grounds subject to the consent of school committees. The board decided to recommend to school committees the adoption of the practice in vogue at Palmerston North schools for the control of children- crossin" roads when schools are dismissed. Mr Brown reported that the scheme had worked splendidly ns a result oj instruction given the children by patrol officers of the Manawatu Automobile Association. Terrace End: Repairs have been effected to the asphalt areas surrounding the building. College Street: Minor repairs to the window gearing have been effected, and tlie fence dividing the school area from the private property on the western side has been repaired. West End: Tho new gas installation for classroom heating has been completed. The weather conditions have not been such as to enable mo to test tlie real efficiency of this installation. Manchester Street. Screens for louvres have been arranged for. Bunythorpe: Tile draining, carried out by the committee, has. boon';completed and is proving effective. Beaconsficld: Minor repairs to plumbing work have been carried out. Bunnythorpo: Replacement of two cisterns 'and repairs to the balance have been effected. Works in band include:— Girls’ High School (Palmerston. North):; The work in connection with the. are well under way.- Boys’ High School (Palmerston North) : Miscellaneous improvements and minor extensions; arc well in hand and should be completed by., the end of tlie current month, llalcornbo: The work in connection with the erection of this building has been cased up because of tho removal of some of the workmen to other works, made necessary by ; reason of our inability to secure the roof covering. Practically the whole of tho exterior woodwork lias been completed, but interiors cannot bo proceeded with until covering-in. has been completed. At present we are proceeding with the laying of the cbncrcto areas and paths and the necessary drainage work. Failing tho contractor being able to proceed with the roof covering on the prearranged date, I propose to cancel tho roof covering arranged for and to cover the j building with iron, sufficient of which 1 have been able to collect. j
