NORTH AMERICAN DEFENCES,
OTTAWA, Sept. 17
Tho Canadian and United States Joint Defence Board announces a decision to conduct an immediate and elaborate survey of the West Coast defences, including the North-Western States, British Columbia and Alaska. The Canadian members of the board will leave by air lor’trie coast to-mor-row for a tonr of inspection, w.hich will be the subject later of a full meeting on the Pacific Coast. Tho Jceel of the 93,000,000-dollar 45-000-ton super-dreadnought New Jersey was laid down in the Navy Yard (states a Philadelphia report). The New Jersey is a sister ship to the lowa, now under construction at Brooklyn. , “FLYING FORTRESSES.’'
The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says the isolationists, Senators Clark and Holt, allege that President Roosevelt is negotiating lor the transfer of half of the United States 59 “Flying Fortress” bombers to Britain, in addition to tor-pedo-boats and. bomb sights. “I wish it were true,’ commented the British Ambassador (Lord Lothian). The War Department has placed an order.for 144,000,000 dollars’ worth of war iilanes. . The British Armaments Purchasing Commission has awarded the Paokard Company an order for 6000 Rolls-Royce motors at a cost of 125,000,000 dollars.
