FLOWED CULTURE

SUCCESSFUL SHOWS REPORTED. The annual report of the Feilding Horticultural Society states that during the 1939-1940 season two very suecess- ] fill shows were held, the rose show in November, and the dahlia show in' I March as part of the Feilding Centennial celebrations. At both there were record entries and the quality of the blooms was outstanding. The attendance was excellent at each show and membership was slightly higher, so that tho balance-sheet naturally shows an increase in funds. At tho evening sessions of each of these shows interest-ing-lectures were given on horticultural subjects. Mr R. W. Stevens, of Bulls, spoke on plant hunters and their discoveries, and Mr P. Black, of Palmerston North, on All the large exhibitors came from districts outside Feilding, Rongotca winning the champion rose class and most points for roses, Halcombe the chamipon dahlia, Danncvirke most points for cut flowers, and Palmerston North most points for dahlias and the decorative points j prize. The society would like to sec i the class for non-competitive couiprejhensivo horticultural displays better ! patronised, for Feilding has good garj dens and can produce excellent displays. In these days of war people are turning to their gardens, and tho society hopes that by carrying on with its shows it may give pleasure to many. Because of careful Husbanding of the never-too-ample funds of the society during the last four years and in view of the many calls which are being made during this year of war on the Feilding tradespeople, the secretaries recommend that no canvassing for trophies should this year be undertaken. The society trusts that by attendance, exhibits, membership, work aud donations the people of Feilding will continue to support their dower shows. I'hanks are expressed to all who have helped the society in the past.
