HOCKEY.

KNOWN HANDICAP COMPETITION

There were only two senior hockey games played at the Hokowhitu Domain on Saturday, these being in continuation of the known handicap competition. The grounds were in perfect condition, and the matches, although rugged, were interesting throughout. Phoenix, by beating United, now hold pracfically an unassailable position in the competition. This team, with a handicap of 7 goals, have so far won every game, and they were all won without the addition of the handicap.

The results, on Saturday were as follow, the scores being without the addition of the handicaps, which are in brackets: Phoenix (7) 7 v. United (scr) 4; Woodville (G) 1 v. Broadway (scr) G. The University v. Air Force senior A game and the Woodville v. United senior B game were not played.

Phoenix opened play from the start and attacked continuously. Although they held a territorial advantage over United, the latter's defence was solid and the game was by no means as onesided as the score suggested. Donaldson and Johnson, Phoenix’s centre forward and centre half respectively, were always dangerous. Butting (left wing) played a brilliant game for the winning team, his stick-work being exceptionally good. Tho majority of the winning team’s goals were scored from loose scrambles around the goalmouth by Donaldson (4), Johnson. I. Byers and Booth. For United, M. Byers (fullback) played a very solid game, as did also Gough and Sullivan. Goals for United were notched by M. Byers, Smith, Nesbit and Eckersley. The umpires were Messrs W. H. Wilson and J. M. McDonald.

Both the Woodville and Broadway teams contained a number of junior players, but the game was a good one. Broadway hold a territorial advantage for the major part, but, like Woodville, they were unable to take advantage of good opportunities for scoring. J. Beale played an outstanding game for Broadway, being the spearhead of many of his side’s attacking movements. Hodgson and O’Brien also played well for Broadway, while Sutton withstood many of the Woodville attacks. The scorers for Broadway were Beale (3).' O’Brien. Hodgson anil Sutton. while B. Leach scored for Woodville. The umpires were Messrs L. Martin and R. Hoarc.
