LATE AIR AY. B. BANKHEAD
Mr W. B. Bankhead, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, whose death was announced yesterday, became Speaker in 1936 and was for 20 years a member of the House. Together with his brother, Senator John Hollis Bankhead, he sponsored the Bankhead Bill, also known as the Cotton Control Act, designed to rehabilitate about 10 000.000 sharecroppers and tenant farmers, negro and white. He was chairman of the Rules Committee of the House for a number of years, an,d on January 2, 1935, he was elected Democratic Floor Leader. His leanings toward the stage 'had an outlet in his daughter, the well-known actress Miss Tallulah Bankhead. Mr Bankhead was particularly interested in fiscal matters, and as an cxnert in such problems he had a notable part in framing the emergency legislation necessitated by the depression. He was known for his practical presentation of abstruse subjects and was recognised as an astute politician and an intelligent and tolerant legislator.
