BASKETBALL.
MATCHES AT WANGANUI. Two fast games of basketball were played in Wanganui on Saturday between the Wanganui A and B. teams and Manawatu A and B teams. The Wanganui representative team beat Manawatu 25 —23 and the Wanganui B team was beaten 17 —15. Within pine minutes of the start of the A grade game Manawatu bad scored seven goals, and Wanganui two, and Manawatu stocks were running high. At the end of the first session each team had scored 11 goals. Until nearly half-way through the second session Manawatu were leading, and a minute before the end of the session Wanganui were one goal ahead; within the last few seconds Wanganui threw another goal and placed the issue beyond doubt. 25—23. Within the fi r st six minutes of the B team game Wanganui had six shots at goal and missed. Every minute of the game was strenuously contested. At the end of the first session Manawatu were leading by eight goals to six. When half-way through the second session Manawatu had a lead of five goals, but Wanganui were dominating the play in the final stages, to be beaten 17—15. Miss C. Vautier, ol Palmerston North, refereed. The Manawatu teams were entertained at afternoon tea. Air R. Francis. the selector of the Wanganui teams, congratulated Manawatu on their excellent play and said that it was a pity after such a splendid game that it was not a draw. Miss Vautier, in returning thanks, seated that, seeing that the is°ue was in doubt until tlie last few minutes, it was a pity that the scoring hoard did not read the other way. <&
