MARTON, Sept. 14. The junior membe.. ... uie Marion Band were engaged in solo competitions on Thursday evening. The judge (Mr A. E. S. Crozier) announced the following placings: F. Morrison, Huge] horn, “Home Sweet Home,” 1; R. Coleman, cornet. “Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes.” 2; Master Richards, cornet, .“Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes.” 3. Sir A. McKenzie, of Signal Street, Marton. was 83 to-day. lie was born at Poyntzlield, Lower . Rangitikei, on September 14, 1857, in a toi toi wharo built by the Ngatiapa tribe. His parents, Mr' Thomas Urquart McKenzie and Mrs Margaret McKenzie (nee Fraser), arrived by the ship Oriental in 1840. Messrs E. S. Ingle and D. Harris, two former pupils of the Marton District High School, left Marton on Saturday to join the Fleet Air Arm. A bogey competition played by the Hnwkestone Ladies’ Golf Club resulted : Mrs Kendrick, Miss Cameron, 7 down ; Miss Cummins, 9 down. Mrs Dudding was the winner of a medal round played at the Marton Club.
Dr T. G. Harpur was the guest of honour at a gathering held recently when he was farewelled by the executive of the Marton Returned Soldiers’ Association and the Marton Patriotic Society. On behalf of the Patriotic Society the Ma3'or (Mr F. Purnell) presented Dr Harpur with a belt and wallet, While Mr McGully made a presentation of a shaving set on behalf of the returned soldiers. Dr Harpur, who saw two years’ service in the last war, has left for Trontham to join the Medical Corps with the rank of captain.
