RUGBY FOOTBALL

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. MANAWATU BEAT WANGANUI. Profiting from the mistakes made by the home side, the Manawatu representative ltugby team beat Wanganui representatives at Wanganui on Saturday by 14 points to 9. Alanawatu secured less of the ball from the serums than did Wanganui, and won only two-thirds of tne number of line-outs taken by Wanganui, yet the visitors quickly capitalised their opportunities to lead to victory. Tho Wanganui j>ack ■was the bettor of tlio two.

The first try Manawatu scored, resulting from a movement by the backs froni a ruck, caught the homo rearguard badly out of position. The last try of the day scored by the visitors, which gave them a win by five points, came from a present made to the three-quarter fine. If one of the Manawatu players had kicked tho ball himself, he could not have placed it so effectively as the Wanganui half-back did, fairly into the hands of the opposing centre, waiting wide out, unmarked, states the Wanganui Chronicle. Manawatu's full-back, E. Clarke, was sound all day, his positional play and kicking being good. The three-quarters, H. Waugh, A. Stewart and D. Bowler, were more solid and better at handling than the Wanganui men, hut the two five-eighths lacked the finish E. Sargisson would have imparted to this important section of the backs. He was unable to get leave from the Ohakea Air Force Station. Wanganui balanced matters by not having K. Welsh, who was unable to play. C. Edlin was a sound half-back, and proved it mainly when playing in support of rucks. He did not get the service K. Janies (his vis a-vis) did from sot positions. In the pack Manawatu fielded good players in I. Dustin, I/. Rutherford, W. Powell and A. Williams. The teams were:

Manawatu. —Clarke, AA’augh, Stewart, Bowler, Rush, Dernier, Edlin, Morgan, Fearn, Powell, Henry, Green, Rutherford, Dustin, Williams. Wanganui.—Grogan, Hore,, 'I aite, Wilson, Chamberlain, Petersen. Janies, McKnight, Whillans, Firmin, Phizackloa, Beiliss, Stewart, Cairncross, PedCatching the Wanganui backs badly out of position, Manawatu scored the first try of the match. Grogan, the home full-back, fell over when attempting to clear. Quickly a ruck was formed, Manawatu heeling. Edlin shot the ball out to Bowler and he scored unopposed on the blind side. Clarke converted. ■ . Wanganui attacked in the forwards and Petersen took a drop-kick at goal, tile ball sailing between the posts, but after 'having been touched in flight by a Manawatu player. Play moved smartly into AVanganui territory and from a scrum Hdlin passed to Dernier, who kicked a field goal. . Petersen. Chamberlain and McKnight were associated in a smart attack in the loose and McKmght. following through, scored after dribbling the ball over the line. Grogan failed with the kick. Half-time followed. . Strong attacks by the Wanganui forwards were rewarded bv .Tames securing from a ruck and going over for a 'try. Grogan’s kick missed. Soon nterwards Taite scored, flames. Chamberlain. Petersen and AVilson handling. Wilson moved accurately infield and played Taite into position, for him and race down the touchlme. cutting off his'onposing winder, and the Manawatu full-hack. The kick failed. - Five minutes before the game ended, .Tames, fed by the forwards when on defence, instead of kicking for the near .touch line, kicked to the centre of the field to Stewart, who drew Hore and sent Bowler on.to score the winning try which Clark converted. Manawatu 14, Wanganui 9. The referee was Mr E. J. Crotty.
